Study to examine APD staffing

Deadly week puts focus back on staffing numbers

AUSTIN (KXAN) - A deadly week comes as Austin Police Department is in the midst of a staffing study to determine the department’s needs.

The death of Jaime Padron and another officer-involved fatal shooting just hours earlier brought questions about police response and resources.

“If you look at the country right now, violent attacks on officers have been going up, up and up,” said Chief Art Acevedo during Friday’s press conference.

The national average for large departments around the country is 2.4 officers per 1,000 residents. Austin is below that average by almost 400 officers, but violent crime dropped last year and a typically friendly reputation keeps the department from being understaffed.

The staffing study is expected to be completed by the end of the summer.
