AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin Police Department had more officers on the road during the Thanksgiving weekend to help with traffic violations.

As a result, 43 people were arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated from Thursday through Sunday, according to APD.

The extra officers will be out on patrol through News Year's Day, keeping the roads as free as possible from those celebrating the holidays and getting behind the wheel in an unsafe condition.

The initiative is all part of "Home for the Holidays" which happens each year.

Officers will be looking for those drivers who appear to be:

  • Intoxicated
  • speeding
  • making unsafe lane changes
  • following too closely to the car in front (tailgating)
  • distracted
  • failing to signal a lane change
  • driving on improved shoulder
  • crossing physical barrier or grassy median
  • failing to use safety restraints
