AUSTIN (KXAN) - Here's one for the "take a bite out of crime" files.
One of the rescued dogs in the care of Austin Pets Alive! at the Town Lake Animal Center was being taken out for his afternoon walk Monday when he sniffed out the money boxes that were found to have been stolen the day before.
Apparently, there was blood on at least one of the boxes stolen, left when someone smashed through the window at the facility.
Police do not have any suspects in the incident but officers were sent out to test the blood. The boxes contained none of the stolen cash, said Melissa Miller, Austin Pets Alive! spokeswoman.
Credited with making the discovery was Wowza, an 8-month-old American pit bull terrier. Ellen Jefferson, executive director of the pet-adoption nonprofit organization said the dog is "a little star here. He's already getting a lot of special treatment and attention. In fact he was sound asleep when I went to go get him because he's had so much attention today."
