Acevedo reflects on 2011, looks ahead

No officers lost in line of duty, chief says

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin finished 2011 without losing a single police officer in the line of duty, a milestone Chief Art Acevedo is perhaps the brightest spot on last year's calendar.

"I think it was a very good year," the chief said in an interview with KXAN. "To me as a chief officer, any year (is good) that you can get through a year without losing one of our officers."


The biggest challenge for the year just ended was the spike in property crimes, which Acevedo attributed to Austin's drug problem. But overall, crime was down in 2011. The chief said he and he wants to keep it that way for 2012.

He is asking for the City Council's approval to purchase another helicopter.
