AUSITN (KXAN) - While districts in the area go back to school in one week, most teachers are back today--stocking up on classroom supplies
But getting a classroom ready for students doesn't come cheap, and there are ways parents can pitch in--to take a little strain off teachers' wallets.
Several teachers are using websites, like TeachersList.com and DonorsChoose.org. The websites allow teachers to post supplies they need for their classrooms, and then parents can go through the lists and help provide those needed items.
Nationwide, school teachers spend an average $462 out-of-pocket for classroom supplies.
Dozens of schools in the area are using TeachersList.com.
In AISD, 11 elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school have teachers using the site.
In Round Rock ISD, four elementary schools and one middle school have teachers using TeachersList.com.
Teachers are asking for everything from art supplies to Spanish books and index cards. But also--some of the most elementary supplies.
"I'm surprised by two things," said Tim Sullivan, with TeachersList.com, "We expected art supplies, rulers and glue. Those are on there. But the number one and number two items on there are actually basics--paper towels and tissues. And we were surprised by that. And the second surprise is that teachers, more than ever, are putting brand names on the lists."
Oak Hill Elementary in southwest Austin currently has 30 teachers with wish lists posted on TeachersList.com.
