AUSTIN (KXAN) - Two people are in the hospital recovering from gun shot wounds after an attempted carjacking in South Austin.
Austin police say it happened Monday just before midnight at the Remington Hills Apartments near Slaughter Lane and Manchaca Road.
"It's a shock to me. It's a shock to the management company and it's even a bigger shock to the residents that live here," said property manager Clifton Robinson.
He says the victims do not live in the typically quiet complex. Clifton is hoping video from a surveillance camera pointed toward the front gate will help police find the suspect. It is the only way in and out of the complex by car.
In the middle of the commotion, those who live in the neighborhoods around the apartments were able to communicate with each other about what was going on.
They turned to the Community Awareness in South Austin Facebook page . Nearly 200 people from nine different neighborhoods have now joined.
"A lot of people find comfort in just at least talking to each other," said Roger Casanova who launched the page last January following a deadly shooting in his own neighborhood that took the life of 17-year-old Brandon Dominguez.
"My goal is still not to get people out on the street, but to stay behind the doors where it's safe and making those calls to whoever they need to go to - to the right people," said Casanova.
Roger has hopes that one day people across Austin will communicate with each other in a similar fashion to fight crime.
"If people see that, the bad guys are going to have to look out because all eyes are watching and all ears are listening," said Casanova.
