AUSTIN (KXAN) - To say two men have been busy breaking into businesses would be an understatement. Austin police say they have stolen cash from more than 25 places in two months.
"That's all I'm doing all day, every day, is trying to track these guys down," said Austin Police Detective Evonne McGuire.
Sometimes they work together, and sometimes they work alone, but their wardrobe of choice is always the same: two dark hooded sweatshirts.
One night they were caught on surveillance camera outside a U-haul site in South Austin pulling up to the office in a four-door older model black car with dark tinted windows and a thin, white stripe down the side.
The driver gets out with a hammer in hand and breaks the glass door. He is in and out of the building in less than a minute.
On another night, a security camera catches one of the men inside a Subway sandwich shop stealing the cash drawer out of the cash register.
A camera pointed toward the counter at a Little Caesar's in North Austin captures one of the men jumping over the counter and stacking up three cash drawers and carrying them out.
Police say the bandits have hit businesses across Austin and are targeting restaurants for the most part.
Detectives are not revealing how rich the two men have become, but say they are doing a lot of financial damage to small businesses just trying to survive.
"We need to protect businesses and the citizens out there so they can continue to do business and not be crippled by it," said McGuire.
