2nd St. reconstruction Phase III begins

Project includes utility work by Austin Energy

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Work on a huge project along Second Street that will change the landscape of Downtown Austin continued Sunday.

Austin Energy began work on April 2 to complete necessary utility adjustments at the intersection of Second and Brazos streets. The scheduled work took approximately 10 days to complete, according to the project managers.

During the maintenance, Brazos Street was reduced to two lanes but the city says access to local businesses was  maintained. Traffic traveling on Second Street was rerouted south to West Cesar Chavez Street between Congress Avenue and Brazos Street.

City officials said the entire project -- now in its third phase -- is slated to be complete by June 15 with new work beginning Sunday. That's something pedestrians should keep in mind.

A temporary detour will affect pedestrian traffic along the existing sidewalks to accommodate the reconstruction work. Pedestrians are asked to follow posted sidewalk detours.
