AUSTIN (KXAN) - Democratic political consultant Jason Stanford and longtime Republican insider Tom Pauken debated the Wednesday night performances of President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney and came out much more feisty than the contenders themselves.

Pauken and Stanford, who appeared on KXAN News Today on Thursday, are no strangers to bare-knuckle politics.

In the 1980s, Pauken waged two epic, but losing campaigns for Congress against Democratic firebrand Jim Mattox of Dallas. In 1998, he lost a spirited Republican primary for Texas Attorney General against John Cornyn, now a U.S. senator. In between, Pauken served in the Reagan administration. He's now chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission.

Stanford managed Democrat Chris Bell's long-shot campaign for governor in 2006. He also has Democratic clients around the country and is a regular contributor to the left-leaning Huffington Post.
