AUSTIN (KXAN) - The temperature in Austin hit 101 degrees early Thursday afternoon, making it the 90th day this year the region topped triple digits.

But by 3 p.m., it dipped down to 99 degrees as a severe thunderstorm developed between Wimberely and San Marcos, moving south. Additional storms appeared likely into the evening, some possibly severe.

On Wednesday, the area hit 103 degrees at Camp Mabry, making it our 89th day of triple-digit heat.

That's 20 more days than the previous record of 69 days set in 1925.

Temperatures will warm quickly ahead of a cold front that will drop into North Texas Thursday evening.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible during the peak heating of the day. That front will move through Central Texas overnight.

Expect cooler, breezy conditions for Friday. Temperatures could drop into the 50s overnight this weekend.
