AUSTIN (KXAN) - It's being billed as your first and last chance to get an inside look at Austin's newest landmark, unless you're ready to buy a condo in Austin's tallest building.
The Austonian Condominium Project is almost ready to accept new residents. This weekend a one-time-only open house at 200 Congress Avenue will provide access to the city's tallest structure. At 56 stories, it is the tallest residential building in the western U.S., destined to be a familiar downtown Austin landmark for the next century.
But unless you work here, live here or are invited by a condo owner to visit this weekend will be your last opportunity to get a peek inside. The Women's Symphony League is hosting a designer showcase Saturday and Sunday. Three of the 178 condos here will be opened for tours, designed by leading local designers.
"The designers wanted to use the newest, the latest, the greatest to share with the general public," said Marla Bommarito-Crouch, who is chair of the Showcase.
As Downtown Austin condos go - The Austonian is at the top of the food chain. According to Capitol Market Research, the average condo price here is just over $1.5 million dollars. The highest priced penthouse is $8 million.
As of early March, about a third of the Austonian condos were under contract or sold. Each buyer is free to choose what to do with their property.
"It's set up so when a client that comes in can individualize it however they need for each and every room," said Bommarito-Crouch.
In addition to the furnished condos, Symphony League patrons can get a look at the public areas where residents enjoy a dog park and saltwater pool.
Guests have the opportunity to consider the possibilities on the streets below. "Nightclubs, restaurants, clubs, all within a radius of walking to enjoy," Bommarito-Crouch said.
