James Pittman, Transplant Director at the North Austin Medical Center talked with KXAN Austin News about organ donation Saturday.

Many people may not know the average waiting time for a deceased donor kidney in central Texas is greater than 4 years. Living Donor evaluation and transplantation of the living donor kidney can occur in as little as 4 weeks.

One of the major barriers to living donation is patients in need of a kidney transplant have trouble approaching or discussing living donation with friends or family members. As a result, friends and family members often don't know that the patient needs the help or that they can help.
