VILLAGE OF VOLENTE, Texas (AP) - State environmental officials will consider a proposal this week to allow millions of gallons of treated sewage to be dumped into a popular string of Central Texas lakes.

The proposal to lift a 23-year-old ban of effluent discharges into the Highland Lakes on the Colorado River is sparking an outcry from waterfront property owners, elected officials and environmentalists.

The plan is up for preliminary consideration Wednesday by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

If approved, officials said it would still take months or longer to implement new rules and conduct public hearings.

The Highland Lakes provide drinking water to more than a million people.
