AUSTIN (KXAN) - A protest held Wednesday night before the opening performance of Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus had a sizeable turnout and will be repeated in subsequent nights.

A group of about 120 people carried signs protesting animal cruelty on Wednesday. The rally started at 6 p.m. on the west side of the Erwin Center and included people of all ages.

Action for Animals organizers said they will hand out anti-circus flyers one hour before each of the shows on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday .

The Action for Animals group holds to a position that circus staff uses training methods that are harmful to the animals. Protests are held to raise awareness about the issue, said organizers.
