AUSTIN (KXAN) - With many Central Texans looking for jobs, there is a group helping to match employers with some of the most loyal employees.
Workers with disabilities, including those with autism, have a 90 percent retention rate at their place of work, but this economy is taking a toll.
David Kennedy is a hardworking, autistic 22-year-old with an amazing attitude.
"I love going to work," said David. "My job is awesome."
He works at a South Austin H-E-B check-out line. It is a job he got with the help of a school program and one he has been able to maintain through a support system with Easter Seals Central Texas.
Easter Seals not only serves as a liaison between David and his employer but also as a search tool to help people like David find work.
"One of our services is finding individuals and adults with autism gainful, meaningful employment so they can be active members of the community," said autism expert Julia McCollum of Easter Seals Central Texas.
Yet, this year has been difficult.
"This market is very tough," said Curt Voelke, the lead employment consultant with Easter Seals Central Texas. "It's the toughest I've seen in 16 years because there is a recession happening."
With fewer jobs out there, David said he considers himself lucky to do something he loves, which is helping others.
"David, someone needs your help over here; I need your help with this person because this lady needs help because she's walking really slow; I need your help please," said David, explaining his job.
He does it all with a smile, too.
"Yeah, I give a big smile," said David. "It's a big smile."
Turns out, it's a learning experience for everyone involved.
"[He] meets people out in public while he's working, making some money, serving the people and the employer," said Voelke. "So it's an education about diversity."
David celebrated his first-year anniversary at H-E-B and said he is looking forward to next year.
Easter Seals Central Texas is working to find employment for up
to 60 of its clients this summer. If you'd like to help, you can
