AUSTIN (KXAN) - Administrators, staff and parents with the Austin Independent School District boarded a bus early Tuesday morning bound for the Rio Grande Valley.
The group of about 30 people will be touring IDEA Public Schools , the charter school program the district is considering bringing to East Austin.
According to the itinerary, IDEA founder Tom Torkelson will be delivering an overview of the program, and then a panel of IDEA students, teachers and parents will be on hand to answer questions.
The team from Austin will be touring IDEA Donna Academy and College Prep campus in Donna, Texas, which opened in 2000.
A KXAN News crew is also driving to South Texas and will have a full report on the trip.
Currently, Austin ISD officials are in negotiations with IDEA to run an in-district charter school in East Austin that would serve students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
During a series of community meetings, Austin officials have presented various scenarios outlining which campuses would be affected.
