BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) - Now that the fire is almost contained in Bastrop County, local volunteers are coming out of the woodwork to lend a helping hand to fire victims. The Texas Forest Service said 28 homes and 12 businesses were consumed by fire.
River Valley Christian Fellowship headed out Monday afternoon to the Alum Creek area to find out how they can help. Amber Wilson and Michelle Smith both helped hurricane victims after Hurricane Katrina.
"I've got dump trucks, clothing, babysitting, food, heavy equipment, trailers to haul things," said Wilson. "I'm getting a lot of people who need the help together and coordinating everything with them."
The church can help coordinate everything from food and clothing needs to manpower helping homeowners clear away burned debris left behind.
"We need to get together to help these people," said Wilson. "That's what this church is all about."
