Truck fire brought I-35 to a crawl

Austin Police have not identified the man who was killed in a fiery crash on Northbound Interstate 35 on Friday around 10:30 a.m., near the 5300 block of the highway. Two men were in the median, working on a disabled truck and trailer. That is when police said a small, white car cut off a moving truck on the Interstate. That truck then hit the disabled vehicle. The trailer burst into flames killing one man and severely burning the other man.

"Just saw smoke and fire erupt and I stopped and got out," said John Foradory, an eyewitness to the accident.

All he could see was smoke and fire. Witnesses at the McDonald's in the area saw a more gruesome scene.

"I [saw] a man in the middle of the street caught on fire, completely on fire," said Christian Gomez, who witnessed the scene. "I got closer and telling him to stop moving, because he is on fire."

Christian Gomez worked helped the man and then tried to save the other man who later died.

"I told them, 'man, somebody's in the truck,'" said Gomez. "They said they couldn't get closer cause it was on fire. I was trying to run up over there and get closer, but they didn't let me."

Emergency crews said it was impossible for anyone to get closer until the flames were out. The two men in the moving truck, were also injured, but their injuries are not life threatening.
