Travis County Farmers' Market to close

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Less than two months after re-opening , the Travis County Farmers' Market is closing again at it's location at 6700 Burnet Road in Central Austin.

The new owners tried to extend their month to month lease beyond September, but said the property owner told them to vacate on September 30.

"We've worked our tails off to make this happen and we pretty much got kicked to the curb," said Scott Spain, one of the two owners. "We feel like little guys that got stepped on by a big guy. I don't know if that's the case, I mean, business is business."

Spain said the Farmers' Market was so successful, the property owner, Paz Dhody, wants to take over the Market himself. Austin News was not able to reach Dhody or a representative for his management company for comment Tuesday.

Spain and his business partner, Eric Snethkamp, re-opened the market in August for the first time since 2007, when plans surfaced for a mixed use development at the site.  Previously the market had served Brentwood, Crestview, Allandale, Northfield and many other neighborhoods for about 30 years.

Spain said the partners would re-open the Travis County Farmers' Market at another nearby location.

"Come hell or high water, I'm going to make sure it happens- I'm going to make sure that we can provide the experience for the community that we promised before our shoes got pulled out from under us," said Spain. "We're here to stay- not here, obviously, but we're going to find a spot and we're going to continue to provide quality produce and farmers market type wares to this community."

Spain said he hoped to announce a new location by September 30.
