DRIPPING SPRINGS, Texas (KXAN) - The Dripping Springs Tiger marching band knows what it's like when the heat is on.
The 161 members of the marching band are the current 4A state champions.
"We are very proud of our students here," said Band Director Keith Lancaster. "They work very, very hard, and they're very dedicated to the program."
That dedication has been tested during the hottest summer on record in Central Texas. The band has been rehearsing 7 1/2 hours every week since late July, but mostly in the morning before school starts. Morning practices are a way for students to beat the heat.
"It kind of feels like you're baking," said Drum Major Mary Godwin. "But really, if you drink enough water, it's not a problem."
During rehearsals, water breaks are mandatory every eight- to 10 minutes, and most band members wear white T-shirts to keep cool.
"It's hot. It's hot for all of us. We all have to get acclimated to the heat," said Lancaster.
Several area school districts are moving to only one afternoon practice a week during the extreme heat.
