AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin police were busy this Super Bowl Sunday enforcing the
no-refusal blood draw program. It wrapped up at 5 a.m. Monday.
"Super Bowl Sunday is the second highest drinking day of the
year outside of New Year's," said Lt. David Mahoney of the Austin
Police Department. "That's why we are out here. We are also out
here because of the high number of DWI arrests last year, [about]
7,000. [We're] out here doing our part to try and keep those
numbers down as much as possible."
This is the third time APD has instituted the no-refusal policy. Sunday, Police made 21 arrests, six gave a breath sample, three voluntarily gave blood, but 12 refused both and search warrants were obtained to get their blood. It is not yet known how many of those tested were above the legal limit.
