AUSTIN(KXAN) - Stacy Barnett and her boyfriend John Goosey, shot and killed in a double-homicide that rocked West Campus last week, were buried on Monday after a joint funeral at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.
The service was planned for the couple before police arrested their alleged killer - a man who said he sold marijuana for Goosey.
"The unfortunate part of this crime is that John Goosey was
involved in the selling of marijuana here in Austin,” said
Lt. Mark Spangler, with the Austin Police Department. “He was
owed a substantial amount of money by Ricky Thompson."
According to the arrest warrant for suspect James "Ricky"
Thompson, who admitted to shooting Goosey and Barnett in the head,
there was a $8,500 debt for marijuana Goosey allegedly fronted him
to sell.
Thompson told a friend that he walked into the 21st Street condo and shot Goosey. Then he claimed he went upstairs and shot Barnett in the head with a .22 caliber gun. Police say they have no evidence that Barnett was involved in any of the dealing.
The scenario surprised those who live near the crime scene.
"I just thought someone had a grudge against someone else,” said Cansu Arslan, who lives in West Campus. “I didn't know it was drug-related at all. I didn't even expect that.”
"Just goes to show you that drugs aren't always in poor communities," said Kyle Hayes, who live around the corner from the condo where the couple was killed.
Those who live in the neighborhood where suspect Thompson lives were also surprised to find out the 19-year-old is accused of such a crime.
"I was completely stunned,” said John McJunkin, who lives across the street from Thompson. “He was a nice guy, borrowed tools, put up security lights around his house."
McJunkin saw Thompson cuffed and carried out of the house Saturday night. He realized it much more serious when he saw the news that his former neighbor is an accused killer.
Even though Thompson is behind bars, charged with two counts of capital murder, his capture is not easing everyone’s fear of what just happened at the condo.
"It's a relief that I won't be threatened by that kind of stuff, but it's kind of scary that it could happen to someone that is there at the wrong time," Arslan said, referring to Barnett.
