AUSTIN (KXAN) - One of Austin's most popular columnists is slowly recovering from a bout with cancer.

John Kelso, 65, has written a column for the Austin American-Statesman since 1977. In May 2009, he learned that he had a cancerous tumor under his tongue.

He underwent surgery and six weeks of radiation therapy. Through his debilitating recovery, Kelso lost 40 pounds. Now, he is slowly getting back on solid foods and starts everyday with a rich, milkshake.

"If I don't die of cancer, I'll die of cholesterol," jokes Kelso.

Through it all, Kelso missed no work and he is still cracking out his usual three columns a week, although mostly from home now.

Kelso's surly style still earns him cranky e-mails from readers, who may not be aware of his illness. Still, he said he does not mind them one bit.

"The worst thing that can happen to a columnist, other than dying of cancer, is being ignored," said Kelso. "So, that sort of thing doesn't bother me. I like getting people worked up."

He is still laughing.
