Green Condo auction Sunday

AUSTIN (KXAN) - This weekend, prospective home buyers can get a rock-bottom price on a South Austin condominium. Kennedy Wilson Auction Group is auctioning off 25 loft-style condos at Bel Air Sunday, August 9.

For Allen Meckel, the Bel Air condo is his dream home.

"Very urban and minimalistic, and I don't want any yard work or anything that could take away from my personal time, so I definitely like the feel of the place," said Meckel.

It was everything he has always wanted, but the price was not in his budget.

"I've always had my eye on this property, and they quickly got out of my price range," said Meckel.

Now Kennedy Wilson Auction Group is auctioning off 25 condos in a one day close out sale. The green homes were originally priced around $400,000, but the auction's starting bids will range from $90,000 to $130,000.

"I was just getting very excited that the auction might allow me to get in a relatively reasonable price," said Meckel.

The remaining condos are the last out of 83 in the Bel Air Community. The auction is a way to guarantee the condos will sell.

"It is a buyer's market, and auction day the buyers are choosing their price," said Deanna Sybrant, Kennedy Wilson Auction Group Project Manager. "The effects of the auction are nothing more than a marketing tool. The home buyers on auction day are basically picking their prices to get their dream home."

The townhouse-style condos are eco-chic from rooftop down to the kitchen. The green buildings have Energy Star appliances and low E double pane windows.

Meckel is prepared to make an offer on auction day.

"I love this town, and I hope I can live in it, in a green community," said Meckel.

The auction will take place Sunday, August 9th at 1 p.m. at the Hilton Austin Downtown. Bidders are advised to arrive no later than Noon.
