Fan drive heats up

AUSTIN (KXAN) - As a heat wave sweeps across Central Texas, hundreds of elderly are without air conditioning or fans. Volunteers with Family Eldercare are hoping the rising temperatures will remind people to donate what they can during this year's Summer Fan Drive.

There have been fewer donations this year than previous ones, but the organization is hoping to ultimately distribute 7,000 fans.

"We just received a shipment of 25 fans that were dropped off at various fire stations," said Krystal Wilson with Family Eldercare. "We're expecting another drop-off soon."

This is the first year fire stations are included as drop-off locations for fans and money. At fire station No. 2 on MLK Jr. Blvd., the donations have been few and far between.

"That's all we've received in the last four days," said one of the firefighters, pointing to the lone fan in the middle of the station's garage.

In 2008, Family Eldercare, along with KXAN and other partner or distributed more than 9,500 fans and 113 air conditioners to more than 4,500 households. Fans are distributed to low-income older adults, people with disabilities and families with children.

"We understand it's hard for everyone this year," said Wilson. "But, $30 will buy two box fans, which will make a world of difference for those who receive them. It's not that much money and it has an immediate effect."

People can donate at several locations including any fire station or Family Eldercare. They can also send a check, cash or make an online donation with their credit card.

The fan drive will last throughout August with periodic events to increase donations. Fan Fare Friday is June 26th at Threadgill's World Headquarters, where people can come to donate fans or money and enjoy live music from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
