AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Capital MetroRail project expects to complete the Downtown Station Wednesday. The project is located outside the Austin Convention Center at Fourth Street between Neches and Trinity streets. The station is among nine stations that will serve CapMetro's Red Line between Downtown Austin and Leander. Service starts March 30, 2009.
"The completion of the Downtown Station brings Capital Metro one step closer to the launch of Capital MetroRail," said Fred Gilliam, Capital Metro President/CEO. "We are very excited to begin service next spring. Capital Metro looks forward to providing a safe, reliable and high-quality system in which all of Central Texas can be proud."
Construction began in August. With the station, CapMetro also improved railroad tracks in the area and made improvements to the sidewalk next to the Austin Convention Center and the Brush Square streetscape. They also built a portion of the new Lance Armstrong Bikeway.
There will be designated rail connector buses that will provide rides to final destinations and other local bus routes.
