AUSTIN (KXAN) - One person was killed while bicycling in the 1900 block of East Highway 71 early Sunday morning.
A vehicle hit Robert Mendez near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport at 4:26 a.m., and the collision closed two lanes temporarily.
Officials said a preliminary investigation shows a maroon Nissan Pathfinder was traveling eastbound on Highway 71 in the exit lane for ABIA's cargo and service entrance when it struck Mendez from behind.
Officials said Mendez was riding his bicycle in the middle of the exit lane in a portion of the roadway that had poor lighting. Mendez was reportedly wearing a black jacket and black pants, and officials said his bicycle had no lights.
According to investigators, there is no evidence of alcohol or speed as a factor in the accident.
The driver of the Nissan stayed at the scene and is cooperating with detectives, according to police.
No charges are expected to be filed in this case, and it remains under investigation.
Meanwhile, Austin police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit detectives at (512) 974-4742.
This is the 55th fatality of 2009. During this time in 2008, APD had 52 fatalities for the year.
