Police: Rappers were angry at promoter

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Two men from the hip-hop group LG Allstarz turned themselves in to police on Friday afternoon, suspected of spraying gunfire into a crowd outside Spiros Nightclub near Sixth Street early Friday morning.

The shooting was in apparent retaliation for being turned away from a scheduled performance because they arrived late, police said.

Police said La Grange, Texas, brothers Brandon Bruce "Big Hutch" Hutchison, 25, and LaBaaron Demon "Li'l Hutch" Hutchison, 21, with be charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after the men allegedly shot eight people with handguns at 2:15 a.m. Friday.

Six victims were taken to University Medical Center at Brackenridge, and two refused medical treatment at the scene. One person was shot in the stomach and is in critical condition.

Police said an officer also suffered minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital.

"It's complete disregard to human life out there, and it's something that we definitely will not tolerate," said Malanka.

Austin Police Department officer Christian Malanka said the shooting followed altercations between the performers and promoter. All Stars was scheduled to be one of the last performance groups at Spiros, but arrived too late to go on, so they weren't allowed to play, police said.

"The involved parties were, in fact, performers and began shooting at patrons and employees," said Malanka. "They were not specifically targeting anybody."

However, Malanka said police are not ruling out the promoter as an intended target.

"The guy created a scene," said Spiros Nightclub attorney Tim Chamber. "They closed down the bar. Then, 20 minutes later, he came back and started shooting."

Witnesses said more than 100 people were gathered outside when the shooting began.

"All of a sudden I heard what sounded like fireworks ... People started running inside the club from outside," said Brian, a barback who declined to give his last name." "He was holding on to his leg saying, 'I got shot, I got shot.'"

The argument began inside the Downtown Austin club located on 611 Red River St.during a rap concert around 1a.m. Friday.

Police said that an hour later, the men went out to their cars, each got a gun, walked back to the club, stood in the middle of the street and shot into the crowd.

Authorities said one left the scene in a Cadillac, while the other was driving a small white four-door car.

The investigation involves several units including the North Bureau Investigations, APD's Gang Unit and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

Meanwhile, police said violence is not new to the area, with police responding to the club more than 170 times in the last year. The club is under review for abatement.

The club will be closed for the next week while the investigation continues.
