AUSTIN (KXAN) - The current co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, Darrell Wyatt from Kansas, will be the next wide receivers coach at the University of Texas, Mack Brown said on Sunday.

"We are so excited about the addition of Darrell to our staff,” Brown said. “He's not only one of the best wide receiver coaches in the country, but he also brings expertise as an offensive coordinator. Darrell's someone who has coached in the NFL and has been recognized as one of the nation’s top recruiters. He has extensive experience working in the Big 12 and recruiting in all parts of Texas. He is a great addition to our staff."

Wyatt has coached for Kansas before, from 1997 - 2000. He grew up in Killeen and has been a coach for the past 21 years with stints at Oklahoma, Baylor and Oklahoma State and a season as a coach with the Minnesota Vikings. He's been at Kansas since leaving Souther MIss. in 2008 as the assitant head coach and offensive coordinator.

“This is just a tremendous opportunity for me and my family,” Wyatt said. “Being a part of a program with such great history and tradition is very exciting. Having grown up in Texas and having played high school football here, it's great to come home to work for The University in the state. Texas is the type of place where the skies the limit on what you can accomplish. They have great resources, a tremendous fan base and compete for championships. The level of expectations are extremely high and that's something I definitely will embrace.”

Wyatt was the lead recruiter for the Sooners in 2004 and is credited with landing Arian Peterson, the nation’s number one prospect at the time. At Oklahoma, he helped the Sooners to four bowl games as the wide receivers coach. He was the passing game coordinator in his final year, when he coached three receivers who were first-day NFL draft picks and who started professionally as rookies.

Throughout his career Wyatt has helped coach at least 10 wide receivers who went on to play in the NFL. “I've been recruiting Texas for a long time and have developed a great rapport with the high school coaches,” Wyatt said. “I'm really looking forward to continuing to build on that. My wife's family lives in San Antonio, my sister lives nearby, so it's a great to be coming home to Texas.”

Wyatt is optomistic about his new position and the man who hired him, Coach Mack Brown. “Coach Brown is pulling together a lot of new staff members and I'm thrilled to be a part of that energy," Wyatt said.

Wyatt is expected to take the helm later this week for the open recruiting period. Wyatt and his wife Cindy have two children, Desmond and Charese.
