FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - The soldier who fought the Taliban in his boxers said he is glad to be back home in Fort Worth, Texas after his year-long deployment to Afghanistan, especially on the Fourth of July.
Specialist Zachary Boyd said at first he thought he would get in trouble after an Associated Press photo showed him perched behind sandbags wearing his pink boxers, T-shirt and flip-flops. He said he had jumped up from a nap to help his unit under fire and did not want to waste time putting on his uniform.
Instead, Boyd has been praised for his courage.
He said his boxers will be displayed in the First Infantry Division museum in Fort Riley, Kansas. Boyd's shirt was from Woolley's Frozen Custard near his Fort Worth home, and he donated it to the store Monday.
Co-owners John Woolley and Brett Allen said they would display it proudly behind a glass case, and they gave him four more shirts, including a pink one.
