Hutchison announces 2010 campaign bid

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison was in Austin Saturday and spoke about her campaign for governor. While she did not formally announce her bid for governor, she made it very clear she is in the race. She huddled with 300 influential Republicans on her team as she prepares for the 2010 campaign.

At a press conference in Downtown Austin, the senator said it is time for a change. She said come 2010, she has every intention of running for office.

"I think we can go forward," said Senator Hutchison. "I think my experience in the senate has been very good, because I've seen the areas that we can improve."

She also addressed Governor Perry's remarks that he thought she would not be running against him.

"I thought the signals were pretty clear," said Senator Hutchison. "We have seen negative campaigns run by Governor Perry in the past. Am I concerned? It's not going to dissuade me. I think that's why we need new leadership."

Senator Hutchison has already filed paperwork to run for governor, however she did not give a specific answer as to how long she'll keep her senate seat.

"It would be no earlier than the end of this year, but it could be that I wouldn't do it until the election," said Hutchison. "I have not made that decision."

With her leadership team behind her, she said she is excited to start campaigning across the state.

"I love traveling Texas and meeting the people, and that's what I'm going to be doing a lot of," said Hutchison.

Senator Hutchison will not formally announce her bid for governor until the summer.
