AUSTIN (KXAN) - In honor of Martin Luther King Junior, hundreds took part in the MLK Day of Service in Austin. They volunteered their time through several community improvement projects. They gathered at Huston-Tillotson University to hear speeches and testimonials of the power of Doctor King's message.

"Martin Luther King Junior is such a great man, and he did glorious things," said Skye Alexander, MLK Day Volunteer.

It is truly a historic year. Volunteers say MLK Day means so much more with President-elect Barrack Obama's inauguration the very next day.

"They're kind of back to back," said Chris Cooper, MLK Day Volunteer. "Martin Luther King Junior day and then Obama is the president. You get the best of both worlds."

"I clearly think the U.S. is undergoing a generation shift," said Leonard Moore, Soul Movement Pastor. "The civil rights generation has officially passed the torch."

It was a day to not only remember Doctor King's life and legacy, but to look ahead to the future and to bring about change.

"One of the things I hope people take away is a united front, working for the betterment of all," said Larry Earvin, Huston-Tillotson University President.
