Heavy rain causes flash flooding
A slow moving cold front triggered storms with heavy rainfall over parts of the Austin metro area Friday night into Saturday morning. Flash flooding was reported in eastern Williamson and Milam Counties, where Doppler radar estimated 4-6 inches of rain had fallen.
A KXAN viewer in Taylor reported water in his home, and several roads were closed in the Taylor, Thrall and Coupland areas. Highway 79 was reported flooded in Milam County early Saturday.
A Flash Flood Watch was extended until noon Saturday, though the cold front was moving through the Austin metro area before 3 a.m., pushing the heaviest rainfall east.
Rain will slowly decrease early Saturday, as breezy northerly winds bring drier and much cooler air into Central Texas. This is the third consecutive weekend that a Saturday morning cold front brought much cooler conditions, after unseasonably warm weather during the work week.
Skies are expected to remain mostly cloudy all weekend, with highs only near 60 degrees Saturday, and 50 degrees Sunday. Some showers may also return to the area on Super Bowl Sunday.
