Garage sale to benefit fire victims

SPICEWOOD, Texas (KXAN) - A two-day long garage sale benefiting Spicewood  fire victims wrapped up at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Spicewood Community Center.

Volunteers with the Spicewood Long-Term Recovery Committee told KXAN they collected more than $4,500.

All of that money will go into a fund and later distributed to area fire victims.

Over Labor Day weekend, a 6,500 acre wildfire raged through the area and destroyed 45.  Dozens of other homes sustained smoke damage.

A call was put out for donations of food and clothing.  Now, with that need met, all of the left over clothes became the bulk of the garage sale.

"We had so much clothing left over and we felt that the clothing was donated  specifically for the fire victims and so we decided to take the donations and turn that into a garage sale," said Karen Lacey, who works at the Spicewood Community Center.

Lacey said most fire victims are now back in their homes or in temporary housing and need furniture and bedding.

Prices at the sale ranged from ten cents up to a few dollars.

A call has now gone out for tools and gift cards to area home improvement stores.  Many area craftsmen and construction workers lost their tools in the fire.

Tools Needed:

 Electric skill saws

 Mitre saws

 Handsaws

 Table saws

 Pancake compressors with air hoses

 Various size nail guns and nail boxes

 Hammers

 Drills with attachments

Erosion Control / Clean up:

 10-20 chainsaws for clean-up

 10,000+ sq ft black erosion control cloths

 6000+ sq ft silt fencing

 Approximately 500 metal rods to stabilize the silt fences

 Wood Chippers
