AUSTIN (KXAN) - City manager Marc Ott has selected Colorado-based KeyPoint Government Solutions to perform the independent outside investigation into the police-involved shooting death of Nathaniel Sanders last May.
KeyPoint, according to the news release from the city, recently completed an eight-year term as the court-appointed monitor for the Los Angeles Police Department.
"I have confidence in KeyPoint," Ott said. "The city has used this firm in the past, and I trust its ability to complete a through review of this case."
KeyPoint is the new name for Kroll Investigations, the firm that conducted the independent inquiry into the shooting death of Kevin Brown in East Austin back in 2007. The Brown investigation included an independent re-enactment of the events the night that Brown was shot and killed. The officer involved in Brown's shooting, Michael Olsen, was fired from the department in the wake of the event.
The police officer involved in the Nathaniel Sanders shooting, Officer Leonardo Quintana, was no-billed by a Travis County grand jury in early August. A Citizens Review Panel, presented with the Austin Police Department's Internal Affairs report on the incident, recommended an additional investigation.
The KeyPoint team will be led by Jeffrey Schlanger. Schlanger has more than 30 years of experience in law, law enforcement and police department monitoring. He also has served on the Executive Committee of the Working Group on National Guidelines For Police Monitors.
