AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to change the way class rank is determined.
In its Monday meeting, the board approved a move to calculate class rank using only "core" classes. Those include math, science, language arts, social studies and two foreign language courses. Austin schools will no longer factor in elective class grades.
"In order to be a successful person in this world, you need to be strong in all different areas in your life," said Ellen Grady-Sessa, who said she opposes the change.
Students who rank in the top 10 percent in Texas automatically get into state colleges.
