AUSTIN (AP) - A proposal for science courses in Texas would drop language requiring students be taught the "strengths and weaknesses" of all scientific theories. Its wording some said has been used to undermine the theory of evolution. The proposed standards were released this week from review committees of teachers and academics.
The measures would also put up roadblocks for teachers who want to discuss creationism or "intelligent design" in biology classes when covering the subject of evolution. The biology review committee proposed language that states supernatural and religious-based concepts such as creationism have no place in science classes.
The standards are subject to approval by the State Board of Education early 2009. A majority of members have said they favor keeping the current mandate to cover both strengths and weaknesses of major scientific theories, notably evolution.
