AUSTIN (KXAN) - Dr. Meria Carstarphen walked around J.J. Pickle Elementary School Wednesday, admiring all the work ahead of her.
"Today, I am excited to become part of this great community - to become a leader in advancing education to new heights, and I pledge to work tirelessly to realize high academic achievement for all our students," said Carstarphen.
Carstarphen will lead a school district with almost 83,000 students, 12,000 employees and an annual budget of more than $864 million. Some of the statistics, however, can be staggering. For instance, 62 percent of Austin students live below the poverty line and 29 percent are English-language learners. Carstarphen plans to look at these as opportunities instead of challenges.
"The future of Austin depends upon tapping the brainpower and creativity of Austin students, and to help them realize their full potential, she said, pledging to operate the District with efficiency and effectiveness," said Carstarphen. "We cannot, and will not, be afraid to change what needs to be changed, to better serve the interests of our children. It will require the courage to do things a little differently, when necessary."
Carstarphen seemed eager to share her vision with the staff when she announced an all-staff convocation on August 18 at the Travis County Expo Center. Her inspiration started early, back when she first visited the district.
"During my first official visit to Austin, several months ago, I was struck by the quality and the commitment of the staff in Austin; the engagement of parents and families in the education of their children; and the support of the community for public education," said Carstarphen.
She said her focus during her leadership will be to focus on higher student achievement.
