AUSTIN (KXAN) - Changes to an intersection near the MetroRail tracks are slowly beginning to take hold with drivers.
This weekend, Austin road workers put up barriers and signs near Airport Boulevard and 51st Street to prevent drivers from turning to stop on railroad tracks while waiting at a red light.
"I think it's a lot better than it was," said Wayne Bish at Ross' Rides Auto Sales. "I think it took them a couple of days to get the basic concept."
Bish has a front-row seat to all the action at the crossing with his car dealership across the street.
Drivers, mostly seemed to obey the law Monday morning, but at least 5 in one hour made an illegal right or left hand turn from Clarkson Street onto 51st street, disobeying the new traffic signs and flexible bollards put up over the weekend.
"It's going to take them a little bit to get used to," said Bish. "If it continues, eventually, there's going to be a big accident."
