AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin police detectives say customers of Tinos Greek Café should check their bank statements.

Unknown thieves hacked into the accounting system for the local restaurant chain, according to Austin police spokesperson Scott Perry.

It is unknown how many people were affected or how long the suspects had access to the information, but police believe the first incident may have happened back in March.

KXAN editor Ryan Gronquist was one of the victims. He was alerted Thursday by University Federal Credit Union that his debit card had been cancelled due to a "data compromise" at Tinos Greek Café.

"In my situation I feel I was fortunate because hopefully they didn't get my money and I found out about it relatively quickly so no harm for me," said Gronquist.

Gronquist, and another KXAN employee were notified about the possible compromise on Thursday. Police said all of the incidents reported to them were from the South location on Brodie Lane, but Gronquist said he did not eat at that location. Tino's has four restaurants in the Austin area.

Tinos owner CJ Kho told KXAN they are in the process of replacing the systems and equipment compromised in the theft and customers should not be concerned.

Austin police saw a similar fraud at the Driskill Hotel restaurants earlier this year and say it is not a new crime.
