Texas inmate attacks attorney in court

GALVESTON, Texas (KXAN/AP) - Authorities said a Galveston inmate slipped out of his handcuffs in a courtroom and attacked his attorney.

Greg Donell Benson, jailed on felony charges including three of assaulting a public servant, was meeting with his attorney Wednesday when the attack happened, sheriffs office spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said.

The sheriff's office does not think anyone other than the attorney, Benson and bailiffs were in the courtroom at the time, Tuttoilmondo said. Bailiffs pulled Benson off his attorney, re-cuffed him and returned him to jail. The extent of the attorney's injuries was not known, Tuttoilmondo said. Later reports said one of the bailiffs had to be taken to the hospital.

Officials are investigating how the 21-year-old slipped off his handcuffs.
