AUSTIN (KXAN) - A large fight outside the Landing Strip early Wednesday morning led to a 23-year-old man's stabbing death. Police have identified the victim as Ernest David Gomez.
Police responded to the gentlemen's club located off of U.S. 183 near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday after reports of a fight.
Authorities on the scene said at least 10 people were involved in a fight that led up to Gomez's death.
Emergency crews transported him to University Medical Center Brackenridge , where officials pronounced him dead at 2:58 a.m.
Police said multiple people witnessed the stabbing, and they are questioning those involved. In addition, authorities said they are questioning a person of interest.
"We're not too concerned there is a person roaming the streets who may have committed this crime," said Senior Police Officer Dennis Farris. "We have a person of interest."
According to police, the victim and another man were involved in a verbal argument inside the club. The argument carried over into the parking lot and resulted in a physical fight.
Witnesses said the victim's wife was at the club with friends and other relatives. He said the group was having a good time until a person with a knife, covered in blood entered the club. Witnesses say that person then locked himself in a bathroom stall. That's when witnesses say they went outside to see what happened. It was then they saw the victim on the ground.
"By the time we got outside," said witness Charlie Brown. "He was on the ground by this red car. He was bleeding and one of the guys who works here was trying to put pressure on him to stop the bleeding and stuff like that. He was shaking a little bit. His eyes were open a little bit but the main thing, they were real emotional; his wife was crying."
The death marks the 20th homicide of the year.
