Norwood appears in court Wednesday

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) - A man who police linked to the murders of two area women back in the 1980s appeared in court Wednesday morning.

Police arrested Mark Norwood last year on suspicions of killing Christine Morton in her home in 1986.

Her husband, Michael Morton, was wrongly convicted and spent 25 years behind bars before DNA evidence cleared him in October.

The DNA pointed investigators toward Norwood.

Still, his attorney said Norwood has not been indicted and that there is little evidence against him.

"There certainly should not be a rush to judgment," said Russell Hunt, Norwood's attorney. "The only way that anyone should ever be convicted of a crime is if it's been proven that they did that crime. And the evidence, at this time, seems awful thin against Mr. Norwood. Certainly, there should not be a conviction based on thin evidence that he did anything."

Norwood is suspected in the killing of Debra Baker on Jan. 13, 1988 . Her family was in the courtroom on Wednesday. They declined comment on the case.

The case has been reset for Feb. 22.
