Police: Suspect upset over daughter's relationship

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin police said the man charged in Monday's deadly shootings was upset that his daughter was involved with another woman.

Police in San Antonio early Tuesday arrested 45-year-old Jose Alfonso Aviles on a capital murder warrant in the shooting that killed two women Monday evening in a South Austin home.

The victims were Norma Hurtado, 24, and her mother Maria Hurtado, 57.

Aviles was allegedly upset his daughter was seeing Norma, prompting the deadly shootings. Aviles' daughter was also at the home at the time of the killings Monday evening, according to police.

"It stemmed from the fact the daughter and Norma were involved in a relationship and the family was just not happy with it," said Lt. Gena Curtis with APD's homicide division.

Police said Aviles had previously threatened Norma and that the two families had exchanged words according to Curtis.

"This had been an ongoing dispute between these families and it turned into a horrific act of violence."

The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force tracked down Aviles to a remote part of San Antonio after they found his car in South Bexar County early Tuesday morning.

About 30 units responded with the help of the San Antonio Police Department Air Wing unit, and Aviles surrendered. He was taken to the San Antonio Police Department Homicide Unit for questioning, while his car is undergoing forensic testing.

The shooting happened in the 7100 block of Dixie Drive near East William Cannon Drive around 6:45 p.m. Witness told police they saw two men running from the area before driving away in a green Chevrolet Blazer.

Austin homicide detectives were told that "a person of interest" in the killings was in Bexar County near San Antonio.

"We hope this arrest brings some closure to the families of the deceased," said U.S. Marshal Robert Almonte of the Western District of Texas. "The joint law enforcement effort of all involved only strengthens our resolve to make our communities a safer place."

Aviles is behind bars in the Bexar County Jail with no bond set.

The case remains under investigation by the Austin Police Department Homicide Unit.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Homicide tip line at 512-477-3588, Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS or text "Tip 103" + your message to CRIMES.

A tip could be worth a cash reward of up to $1,000 if it leads to an arrest or charges.
