AUSTIN (KXAN) - A driver faces charges of failure to stop and render aid after he fled from a crash involving a motorcyclist Friday night, police said. When questioned, the suspect said he "thought he struck a bicyclist" not a motorist and continued driving.

According to an affidavit from the Austin Police Department , officers responded to a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Dawson Road and Barton Springs Road. A motorcyclist with an injured leg told officers he had been struck by a black Chevy, its driver identified as Gerardo Diaz.

Witnesses on scene provided police with a license plate number and investigators located Diaz a short time later at his home.

Diaz told investigators that he thought he hit a cyclist but he "didn't want to get in trouble again" so he didn't stop. Four days earlier, Diaz was ticketed for possession of marijuana.

The motorcyclist received an injury to his leg but refused medical treatment on scene.
