AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin Independent School District police said they are not sure why an Austin High School student opened fire on a car-load of people Monday night near the school.
One of the young people in the car he shot at is also puzzled by the shooting.
"A bullet could have hit me in the back of my head, and I could have died,” said Imani Layssard. “It's shocking. I could have died that day at 15 years old. I'm scared. It's scary."
Imani Layssard said she and a friend were waiting for a ride home Monday evening when the shooting happened.
"[The suspect] was throwing acorns at us, and we told him to stop," said Layssard.
Her friend called their boyfriend and asked him to hurry to the school. When he arrived, police said the suspect, 17-year-old Jay David Carbullido, exchanged a few words with the driver. Layssard said they were all leaving when the unthinkable happened.
"He showed us the end of a rifle, and we thought it was a pellet gun at first, until he started shooting like eight or nine bullets and shot out two windows, " said Layssard.
Luckily, no one was hurt during the shooting.
"Jay's a good guy,” said Erin Barnett, who has known Carbullido for several years. “He really is a good guy. I would never expect that from him and sometimes people do dumb things. I think that people are taking it way out of turn. He would never hurt someone."
Layssard, however, is a living witness to a Carbullido's actions.
"It's still pretty shocking. I'm still pretty scared."
Carbullido did turn himself in to police shortly after the shooting.
