AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin police caught crooks in the act stealing cars along Lady Bird Lake by strategically placing "bait cars."

Police found thieves were preying on people at the hike and bike trail along Veterans Drive.

They put out bait cars and found people stealing everything from wallets and purses to driving off with a car.

"The bait vehicle program consists of up to nine vehicles being deployed at any given time in hot spot area throughout the city," said Sgt. Richard Stresing, Austin Police Department.

This time, APD focused on crooks who were targeting runners and walkers at Lady Bird Lake.

"It's an easy spot to either brake in and steal a car or steal valuables inside," said Mickey Wysocki, jogger.

"If a guy is dumb enough to walk to a car with a window down and start prowling around he's dumb enough to get caught," said Rob Smith, walker. "I'm glad they are doing something about it."

According to police, there are three things you should remember to avoid becoming a victim:

  1. Take things like your wallet or keys with you.
  2. Hide anything of value that you can't take with you.
  3. They said do not forget to lock your doors and roll up your windows.
