SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) - A San Marcos woman woke up Thursday at 12:30 p.m. to man standing in her bedroom holding a gun. The man proceeded to sexually assault her in her Burleson Street home.

So far this year, San Marcos has had 16 sexual assault reports filed. In those cases, the victims knew their attackers. This is the first case that involved a suspect whom the victim did not know.

"Stranger sexual assaults are very uncommon," said Commander Terry Nichols, with the San Marcos Police Department. "Usually they are date rapes or acquaintance rapes."

Commander Terry Nichols with the San Marcos Police Department said this crime is frightening.

"Our fear is he's going to strike again," said Commander Nichols. "So, we want people to be very aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior."

Police report the man got in through a door that was not locked, reminding everyone the importance of locking doors.

It is a crime that has raised an alert for those who live in the historic district.

"We are very cautious not because we never had anything like that happen," said Brant Schroeder, who lives on the same street where the assault happened.

He said he will warn his friends about the crime and remind his roommates to keep all doors locked.

The suspect is still on the loose. San Marcos Police ask anyone with information about the crime to contact them immediately.
