Fugitive arrested in Pflugerville

Wanted for kidnapping, sex assault and arson

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (KXAN) - Nathanial Ryan Smith, 29, was arrested by Pflugerville police Thursday morning. He was wanted in Tacoma, Wash. for outstanding warrants on kidnapping, sexual assault, arson and felony harassment charges. Smith had four counts of sexual assault and two on kidnapping.

The U.S. Army soldier is suspected in two rapes in Pierce County, in Washington state. Smith went AWOL, and police asked for help in trying to locate him. According to detectives, Smith found a woman on the street on New Year's Day and strangled her until she was unconscious. Then, Smith allegedly dragged her to his residence where he raped and tortured her. After this crime, Smith allegedly attempted a similar crime with another woman, but this time set fire to his home afterwards. The second crime occurred on Jan. 3. Smith went missing around that time.

Officials from Washington state are set to arrive in Pflugerville to interview Smith late Thursday night.
