Daniel's mother visits him in jail

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Mary O'Dell, clad in khaki pants and a white shirt, visited her son at the Travis County Jail Monday night.

Brandon Daniel, 24, is charged with capital murder in the shooting death of Senior Officer Jaime Padron inside a North Austin Walmart store early Friday morning.

Padron went to the store after dispatch received a call of a possible shoplifter with erratic behavior.

"I just want to see my son," said O'Dell, who arrived in Austin Monday morning from Colorado. "Just give him support. He needs us."

O'Dell said Sunday night she spoke with her son by phone just hours before the shooting.

"I knew he didn't sound very good, and he told me he had been drinking and taken a Xanax -- and he had taken  several. I asked him if he had seen a psychiatrist for depression, and he said, 'No,'" O' Dell explained.

O'Dell said her son has been assigned a public defender but she could not answer anything more definitive.

"I am just going to tell him I love him, but we are going to talk about everything else but [the shooting] and just move away for the moment from the whole thing," she said.

Following the jail visit, O'Dell was flanked by an unidentified female. She declined to talk on camera and declined to answer whether or not her son felt remorseful.

Daniel remains in the Travis County Jail and is facing capital murder and driving while intoxicated charges. He is set to appear in court on Thursday for the DWI charge, which goes back to February.

Meanwhile, visitation will be held for Officer Padron from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Tuesday at Cook-Waldon Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd.  A funeral service will held at 11 a.m. at Shoreline Church, 15201 Burnet Road.

A police honor guard will assemble outside of the church after the service .

Police are planning a three-hour procession that will effectively lap the city and will likely affect afternoon traffic flow.

The motorcade will leave the church at 1 p.m. and head north on Burnet Road to State Highway 45 frontage roads. Vehicles will head east to the southbound Interstate 35 frontage roads to the flyover at Ben White Boulevard.

The route then will proceed west to U.S. Highway 290, and then take Hwy. 290 west to State Highway 71 to the intersection of Ranch Road 620.

The Police department’s highway enforcement command will continue onto San Angelo. The route will be State Highway 71 west to U.S. Highway 87 north. Officer Padron will be laid to rest in San Angelo, the city where his ex-wife and two children live.
